GARFIELD RESIDENT - HELPING MANYAt the City of Garfield’s recent council meeting, we had the pleasure of having Cassita Messiah, a Garfield resident (although she is much more than that) in attendance. Messiah was there to present tokens of appreciation to some of our Garfield students who will be serving in the military. In 2007, Messiah’s son, Freddie N. Porter, was killed while living his dream of serving his country in the United States Navy. She has taken her son’s tragic death and turned it into a purpose by creating the Freddie N. Porter Scholarship Fund Inc. so that our children will have the opportunity for a better chance at life. Aside from raising thousands of dollars for scholarships set aside for Garfield students headed off to college, she also helps students who have decided to serve in the military. So, while we watch our televisions and read the newspapers about all of the unfortunate and terrible events happening, it is important to note and acknowledge that there is an angel living right here in Garfield giving from her heart for all the right reasons. And her name is Cassita Messiah.
